From Thrones to Technology: The Fascinating History of Stairlifts

At Kudos Stairlifts, we spend every day helping people across the South East of England regain their independence at home. But did you know that the idea behind stairlifts dates back hundreds of years – all the way to King Henry VIII?

Let’s take you on a short journey through the history of stairlifts. From royal ingenuity to modern engineering marvels, it’s a story that might surprise you.

👑 The Original Stairlift? Henry VIII’s ‘Stair-Throne’

Let’s rewind to the 1500s, where we find the famously larger-than-life King Henry VIII struggling with mobility issues later in life. After a jousting accident left him with a painful leg injury (and with his royal weight not helping matters), ascending the steep staircases of his palaces became a royal ordeal.

So what did he do? According to historical accounts, Henry VIII had a mechanical chair installed at Whitehall Palace to help him move between floors. It was essentially a block-and-tackle lift: a chair fixed to the wall, operated by servants pulling ropes to raise and lower the king.

  • Was it comfortable? Probably not.
  • Was it safe? Debatable.
  • Was it clever? Absolutely.

While this ‘stair-throne’ wasn’t quite the electric stairlifts we know today, it was a forerunner of the same principle: helping people with limited mobility maintain their independence in their own homes.

🛠️ From Royal Ropework to Early Engineering

Fast forward a few hundred years and stairlift design starts to become more recognisable.

The first modern stairlifts began appearing in the 1920s in the United States. A self-taught engineer named C.C. Crispen is often credited with creating the first powered stairlift for a friend who had difficulty climbing stairs after a polio diagnosis. He called it the ‘Inclin-ator’, and it became the starting point for what would soon become an entire industry.

These early stairlifts were fairly basic but incredibly helpful. They ran on steel rails fitted to the staircase and were powered by electricity, with a folding wooden chair mounted on rollers – a massive step forward from Henry’s rope-and-pulley system.

📈 The Rise of Stairlifts in the UK

In the decades that followed, stairlifts became increasingly popular across the world, especially here in the UK, where our charming period homes often come with narrow staircases and tricky layouts.

As our population aged and people began prioritising independence at home, stairlifts evolved to meet those needs. Manufacturers focused on safety, comfort, and customisation, and today, we’re proud to say that modern stairlifts are more reliable and stylish than ever.
